The Invertebrate collection at Calderpark was started by David Hughes in the mid-1980s with the Glasgow Garden Festival in mind. The award winning Hugh Fraser Tropicarium , an extremely large and impressive Orchid and Butterfly House resulted. Unfortunately, for financial reasons it has not proved possible, at least to date, to re-erect this building at the Zoopark, although a remnant of the invertebrate collection remains and is an integral part of our education provision.

The following specimens are maintained under the day-to-day supervision of volunteer Mrs Gila Allan .

• Hissing Cockroach Gromphadorhina portentosa
• House Crickets Acheta domesticus
• large spiders (Tarantula-type)
• 3 Giant African land snails.
• Indonesian snails.
• Mealworms Tenebrio molitor
• Numerous Indian Stick Insects
• 4 Imperial scorpions
• 20, or more eggs of Australian phasmids .
• 1 female centipede-cholopendro.
